Diesel engines are what they sound like. What do they do?
Table of Contents
Diesel engines are engines that run on diesel fuel.
Diesel engines are internal combustion engines that convert diesel fuel energy into rotary mechanical energy using compression ignition. Rudolf Diesel, born in Paris in 1858, was the inventor of the diesel engine. It originally intended to run on peanut oil when the first diesel engine prototyped in 1893.
At the time of the first diesel engine, diesel fuel was a by-product of removing paraffin and kerosene from crude oil and was a waste product because it was used to run diesel engines, not diesel fuel. The term “diesel” was finally given to this waste product in 1894.

What is the function of a diesel engine?
Diesel engines work by compressing air (containing oxygen) with diesel fuel using pistons. A ratio of about 15:1 used to compress this air, causing the mixture to explode, which forces the piston back up in a reciprocating motion. An engine’s crankshaft then converts this motion into rotary motion.
An engine that runs on diesel fuel has several major components.
Fuel System of an engine
Fuel injection pumps, lift pumps, injectors, and fuel pipes are all part of the fuel system. Furthermore, there will be fuel filters and possibly a water separator to protect your diesel engine from damaged by poor quality fuel.
The engine’s lubrication and oil systems
Using oil under pressure to lubricate and reduce friction, your engine’s lubrication system keeps it running smoothly and prevents wear on the moving parts. A pump and filters included in the oil system to keep contaminants out of the oil.
This system cools the engine
An engine’s cooling system is responsible for generating the engine coolant, usually a mixture of distilled water and glycol. Some additives added in order to reduce corrosion. A coolant filter may also installed on some engines and a “water pump” may act as a cooling system pump. Usually, a radiator used to cool the liquid down, but sometimes, a heat exchanger used to cool the coolant.
Exhaust systems on engines
Done by moving the waste combustion gas out of the engine cylinders, through the exhaust manifold, and into the main muffler system that reduces noise. Most often, the muffler is an addition to reduce the noise to the customer’s requirement, not a part of the engine. The exhaust gas will passed through the turbo-charger to make it spin if one installed.
The turbocharger on the engine
There will be a turbo on the majority of Diesel engines. When the combustion air compressed, it makes the engine more powerful.
